No. Refresher training just needs to be conducted when operators are proven to be operating unsafely, happen to be in an accident or near miss, receive a poor evaluation, or if there are changes at the office or type of truck. OSHA will, however, need an evaluation of each powered industrial truck operator's performance at least one time every three years for all forklift types.

Forklift Operator Qualification

Year operator evaluation?

The"test" of"functionality" demanded by the OSHA standard can't be met by a written exam alone. A written exam by itself doesn't indicate whether the operator is working the powered industrial forklift truck safely.

In most cases, the person conducting the test could do two things:

First, see the powered industrial forklift truck operator during normal operations to determine whether the operator is doing safely, and secondly, ask pertinent questions to make sure that the operator has the knowledge or experience required to run a truck safely.

In some cases, because of the danger or intricacy of the surgery, the level of the shift in conditions, or the operator's need for additional abilities, the examination will need to be lengthier and more comprehensive.

Is a vision/hearing test required prior to an employee can operate a forklift?

Federal OSHA's powered industrial forklift truck standard does not expressly address vision/hearing requirements for operators. However, although Federal OSHA does not specifically address it in the regulation, there are obviously some possible concerns and security problems and these need to be evaluated in light of the particular operations.
